Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) is a natural procedure that uses your body’s own plasma to stimulate the hair follicles which then encourages new hair regrowth, and reduces the process of thinning hair. A small blood sample is taken from the patient, and this blood is then placed in our centrifuge. When centrifugation is complete, the patient's plasma will be separated from the red blood cells. The PRP that contains concentrated amounts of growth factors is extracted from the blood sample and injected into the patient's scalp where the hair is thinning. As the skin begins its wound-healing process, these growth factors are present in the follicular bulge area where stem cells are found. This activates the proliferative phase of the hair cycle, resulting in new, denser and healthier hair growth.

Patient selection is critical for success. Some patients are not candidates for this treatment if they have advanced AGA (Norwood V-VII or Ludwig III). This includes patients with traumatic alopecia and autoimmune alopecia, as they may have insufficient adnexal normal tissue to mount an adequate response.
The concern with autoimmune alopecia is that even if the healing cascade is stimulated and anagen prolonged, the baseline autoimmune etiology may counter treatment efforts. Contraindications for treatment with PRP include: significant platelet dysfunctions; hypofibrinogenemia; local infection or septicemia; pregnancy; poor blood clotting; keloid-prone patients; sensitivity to bovine thrombin—if used; and hemodynamic instability.
Prior to treatment, it is recommended for patients to have blood work done. Blood work test including CBC with platelets; serum iron; and estrogen, testosterone, thyroid, pituitary and antibody panels.

"I have visited the MedSpa for spider vein removal, IPL, and a chemical peel. On my first visit I was so nervous because of course I had read every horror story on the internet about procedures going wrong. Marie was absolutely terrific! She explained every step of the procedure, any related down time, and the realistic results I could expect. I love my skin now more in my 40s than I ever have-even in my 20s. For the first time in my life I no longer wear foundation without being self-conscious. I would definitely recommend Mountcastle Medical Spa to anyone who is thinking about improving their skin or just has questions."- S.N. / Yelp / Apr 29, 2019

Most patients expect to see new hair growth about six months after the procedure. Although the optimal number of PRP treatments and intervals has yet to be determined, we recommend four to six treatments spaced four weeks apart.

Prior to the procedure, a topical numbing is applied one hour before the procedure, then the scalp is cleaned with an iodine-povidone preparation. The ZimmerChiller is used to help further numb the area during treatment using very cold air- similar to icing an area. Once the procedure is done, patients are counseled to use gentle, daily hair shampoo and conditioner.
